The Philosophy of Choice

Charles Ramsey

A friend called the other day and said, “I have one name for you, Charles Ramsey.” There are those in the main stream media that are attempting to downplay the role of this man in the Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight rescue…they cannot. Mr. Ramsey’s animated interviews are definitely comical, but does that make him any less of a Hero? Absolutely not!

Whether we in the United States of America want to admit it or not, racism, bigotry and prejudice are alive and well in 2013. There is the more subtle institutional racism and the less politically correct, overt calling another person the ‘N’ word, just because (been there, had that done). That is what makes Mr. Ramsey’s action even more amazing. The average person would not have gone onto someone’s property and poked his nose in their business, where most Americans feel it does not belong; you would have to be crazy. Well, Ramsey’s brand of crazy just liberated three lives. Moreover, as he mentioned, racial dynamic will always come into play when there is a member of an oppressed group assisting a member of a dominate oppressor group. Gender dynamics is also another factor. Suffice it to say, those women could not have escaped without his help. Period.

The media is now reporting that, “Amanda Is The True HERO!” The slight difference in the two heroes’ is…Amanda Berry is ‘A’ hero for her attempt to escape after 10 years, but Charles Ramsey is ‘The’ hero in his successful attempt at freeing a woman in one day. None of us was there and far be it for me to judge, but give credit where credit is due.

Did I mention…Charles Ramsey refused the award? He wants all of the award money to go to the women held captive. Now, is that heroic or what? Since money is involved.
